Beeswax candles are 100% natural and burn cleaner than other candles because they produce negative ions as they burn.  The ionization clears the surrounding air, resulting in a purer scent as you enjoy your favorite candle.

Today, just about anyone can make their beeswax candles from the comfort of their own home.  The process of making your beeswax candles is easier than you might think, and it’s a lot of fun.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your very first beeswax candle:

Beeswax Candle Kit

When it comes to making your beeswax candles, several items will be required.  You’ll need a mold for the candle you choose to make and the wick material appropriate for this specific type of candle.

Here are some more things you may want to have on hand before going any further:

  1. An electric melting pot with a spout
  2. Measuring cups and spoons
  3. Kitchen twine or other wick material
  4. Beeswax pastilles (also called pellets)

One of the best ways to make beeswax candles is for first-time candle makers to use a keck clip.  A keck clip essentially allows you to mold the candle without having to dip the wick over and over again.

If you’re making your beeswax candles for the first time, it is recommended that you use a pillar-style mold with a hole in the center of it.  This type of mold is designed specifically for dipping or kecking.

Once you have all of your materials gathered together, you’re ready to get started!

Step One:  Melt the Beeswax

Place a few handfuls of beeswax pastilles in the melting pot.

Make sure that you don’t add too much, or the candle will be more difficult to remove from the mold once it’s done.

Step Two: Prepare the Wick

Take the piece(s) of kitchen twine and cut a length somewhere between 12 and 18 inches. Do not burn yourself!  Hot beeswax pastilles tend to be hotter than boiling water so use caution when working with them. Be sure to have a non-flammable surface below the candle mold before starting.

Step Three: Dip the Wick And Prepare The Mold

Tie one end of the piece of the wick to the keck clip, making sure it is secure. Next, position the wick in the center of your mold. Take a wooden spoon and carefully lower the keck clip into the pot of melted beeswax.

The keck clip may take a minute or two to be completely submerged in the candle wax, but this is normal. Once lowered, remove your hand and let it cool until you can touch it without getting burned, anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, depending on the temperature of the wax and which part of the candle you’re working on.

The secret to dipping beeswax candles is slow and steady. Begin by removing your hand from the pot and immediately lowering it back into the hot wax for another dip.

Repeat this step, slowly and steadily, until you’ve reached a point about 1 inch from the top of your mold. It is not recommended that you dip further than this because it will be difficult to remove the candle from the keck clip when the wax begins to harden and shrink.

Step Four: Prepare the Wick For A Second Dipping

Remove the keck clip once you reach an inch from the top of your mold.

Carefully tie the end of your piece of the wick to something that is not flammable (this will be used for holding onto it for dipping). Next, you’re going to wait for about 30 minutes before plunging back into the melted beeswax.

This allows time for the first layer to cool and harden. The waiting period is an important part of the dipping process, don’t skip it!

Step Five: Prepare the Wick for A Third Dipping

After your first layer has cooled for at least 30 minutes, you’re ready to move on. Begin by removing what remains of the wick from the keck clip and tying the candle to support some sort.

Next, you want to wait anywhere from 1-3 hours before dipping again. This allows time for the second layer to cool and harden.

Step Six: Dip the Candle for the Final Time And Remove It From The Mold

The final dipping is the most important part of making beeswax candles. Begin by dropping the keck clip back into the hot wax and waiting about ten seconds before pulling it out again. Next, you want to dip it in several times at a slow and steady pace.

Don’t be afraid to move fairly quickly as long as you do this gradually. Continue this process until you reach the top of your mold. Once there, remove the keck clip and let it cool for a few minutes before removing it from the candle’s wick.

Step Seven: Trim The Wick And Enjoy Your Beeswax Candle!

When you’re finished dipping, you will need to trim the wick before you can enjoy your finished candle. This is an easy step and can be achieved with any standard pair of scissors (or shears, if you happen to have them).

Once trimmed, place the candle on a non-flammable surface and let it sit for about an hour or two before lighting. Lighting your candle for the first time can be a little tricky because it tends to smoke quite a bit.

This is normal and will decrease with each lighting of the wick. The result is beautiful, unique beeswax candles that you made yourself! Beeswax candles are eco-friendly, handmade, and fun to make; the perfect combination for a simple, inexpensive gift or great decoration.
